The conversation of abiding at home imposes itself with urgency with the continuation of misconceptions and unfair judgments that demonize it, deform it, and rob it of every beautiful trace, essence and value.
It seems clear that the fascination with jobs in companies, and the fascination with attractive sources of income, for many women, has created a kind of arrogance and superiority over the women who choose to stay at home, and this in turn has reflected into the hearts of many women, causing them a sense of inferiority, failure, poor achievement, and poor influence in life, all of which resurface whenever the subject of staying at home is brought to attention.
This is indeed one of the most appalling things circulating in this time and age, and one of the most insidious means of distorting the correct concepts and fighting the rights of Muslim women.
In this article, I will hastily summarize the most prominent jobs that a woman can hold at home— jobs which cause her elevation in both this world and the hereafter, and bring a great and blessed impact on the soul, family, and society— more so than the job of a woman who underestimates the virtue of the abiding at home as a woman, even if she so works for the most prestigious companies, wins the largest titles, and carries the most luxurious certificates.
There is no doubt that for a woman to abide at home without any goal or job to occupy herself with is the closest depiction of a “cemetery” in this scenario.
Sadly, this is the case of women who are laggards and oppressors of their own selves, who live without an identity nor a compass. A case very different from that of women who compete for good deeds! Those who build their kingdoms and castles under the light of The Almighty, turning their homes into beacons of light and generosity for the entire Muslim Ummah throughout the Muslim generations to come!
The goal is not to belittle women who work in jobs outside their houses, nor deprive the truly righteous of them any of her rights.
The goal is to enhance the status of the home-abiding woman while highlighting the opportunities and roles she possesses, which are in fact crucial to achieve the happiness, balance, and stability of families, while ensuring the continuity of their vital role in life.
Indeed, one of the greatest crimes against the religion and the Muslim nation is to demean the role of Muslim women in their homes, and to marginalize them and let them down, despite the fact they bridge one of the most important gaps of the nation, which one must not neglect, nor fail to support and preserve it as an effective factor of the emergence of the Ummah and the establishment of the structures of Islam on earth.
20 jobs for home-abiding women:
1- The job of a slave of Allāh from among the people of the Qur’an and those closest to Him:
(—————)
Ibn Mas’ud (May Allah be pleased with him) reported:
The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: “[Whoever recites a letter] from Allah’s Book, then he receives the reward from it, and the reward of ten the like of it. I do not say that Alif Lam Mim is a letter, but Alif is a letter, Lam is a letter and Mim is a letter.”
[At- Tirmidhi].
On the other hand, we see the woman who goes out all dressed up to her job in the “prestigious” company, mixing with men, fascinating them, and turning herself into an engine that emits bad deeds, just to arrive at the end of the month with a rich monthly salary as well as a mountain of bad deeds!
So tell me, now, O reader, which is the true achievement; is it the mountains of good deeds and the knocking of the doors that hold within them The lord’s divine bounties, which come with the guidance, enlightenment, and great favor of Allah Almighty… or the act of pleasing people by deserving the wrath of Allah Almighty.
‘Uthman bin ‘Affan (May Allah be pleased with him) reported:
The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, “The best amongst you is the one who learns the Qur’an and teaches it.”
[Al-Bukhari].
Abu ‘Abd al-Rahman Al-Sulami said, “That is what seats me in this seat of mine.”
(————————)
Is it not enough of a blessing for the home-abiding Muslim woman that she can recite Allah’s verses by heart whereas the other woman is deprived of even opening her Qur’an; for the atmosphere of her worldly job does not help, and panting after the wreckage of the Dunya easily robs her of all wisdom and insight!
This is the first title that the Muslim woman staying at home should seek to obtain, which is the title of : “an (amah) [female slave] of Allah from the people of the Qur’an and those closest to Him”. This is a great bounty from Allah in this world and the hereafter, and is the way of fully following and responding to the command of Allah Almighty in the footsteps of the unique generation (the generation of the Sahabah).
Allah Almighty said:
which means: (And remember what is recited in your homes of the revelations of Allah and wisdom).
It can be found in Tafseer al-Sa’di for this verse:
“Having commanded them to strive in His way, by means of the commands and prohibitions, Allah now tells them to seek knowledge and explains to them the way to attain that:
{And remember what is recited in your homes of the revelations of Allah and wisdom}
what is meant by the revelations of Allah is the Qur’an, and what is meant by wisdom is the subtle meanings thereof, or the Sunnah of His Messenger (ﷺ). Allah commanded them to remember these things, which includes remembering the words, reciting them, remembering the meanings, reflecting upon them and pondering them, deriving rulings and wisdom from them, acting in accordance with them, and interpreting them correctly.
{Verily Allah is Knower of subtleties, All-Aware}
He is aware of the subtleties and hidden meanings of things, what is hidden in people’s hearts, what is hidden in the heavens and on earth, and deeds that are done both openly and in secret. His knowledge and awareness mean that He urges them to be sincere and to keep doing deeds in secret that Allah will reward. One of the meanings of the divine name al-Lateef (translated here as Knower of subtleties) is that He guides His slave to do good and protects him from evil in very subtle ways of which he is not aware, and He sends to him provision that he does not expect, and guides him to take measures that are difficult but will be the path by which he will attain the highest levels.”
May Allah grant the Muslim women abiding in their houses this high place and this great bounty.
2- The job of the worshipper:
Abiding at home gives ample room for women to worship Allah and be diligent in acts of obedience and closeness to Allah almighty; such as night prayers, superfluous prayers, fasting, remembrance of Allah, etc…
Women at home have a golden opportunity to a schedule of worship that becomes the gateway to great conquests and countless bounties, and a means to rise which is desperately needed. Staying at home provides an opportunity to achieve a righteous rank, virtue, and title which deserves to be fought over with swords!
Allah said :
Which means: (It may well be, if he were to divorce you, that his Lord would give him in your stead wives better than you, submissive to Allah, beivers, obedient, repentant, devout in worship and given to fasting-previously married and virgins).
It says in Tafseer al-Sa’di’s on this verse:
“He did not divorce them, but if he had divorced them, then there would have been other wives, as Allah mentions, who would have been women of virtue who combined Islam, which is outward compliance with the laws, and faith, which is inward compliance with the laws by way of belief and actions of the heart.
{obedient}-
the word translated here as ‘obedience’ refers to a constant state of obedience to Allah.
{repentant}
this is, repenting from all that Allah dislikes. Thus they are described as doing that which Allah loves and repenting from that which Allah dislikes.
{previously married and virgins}
that is, some of them would be previously married and some of them would be virgins.
when they heard this warning and discipline, they hastened to seek the pleasure of the Messenger of Allah. Thus this description was applicable to them, and they became the best of believing women. This indicates that Allah did not choose for His Messenger anything but the best circumstances and the most sublime of options. Because Allah chose for His Messenger that the wives mentioned here would stay with him, this indicates that they were the best and most perfect of women”.
Reaching this rank requires abiding at home, and a woman cannot be a [good] worshipper of her Lord and humble in her worship while working in a company or a job outside the home that occupies every day and may be the source of ongoing evils such as mixing, make-up, and working in what is not worthy of a Muslim woman, and {Allah has not made for a man two hearts in his interior}.
3- The job of the student of knowledge and jurisprudence:
Here is another great opportunity for women at home, especially with the availability of means of seeking knowledge on the Internet and with the availability of trusted sources, books, specific programs, explanations of the scholars, websites, and Islamic libraries rich with knowledge!
The matter only requires setting a study schedule, based on the rule: “What cannot be achieved entirely should not be abandoned altogether.” and the rule: “Little but steady is better than much but sporadic.”
This turns the woman abiding at home into a scholar of the religion of her Lord and a sage that enlightens her life and the lives of those around her with her knowledge, all while beautified with a crown of majesty!
Islamic knowledge and jurisprudence provides her wisdom and dignity, and raises her to an elevated rank as it had raised the mothers of the believers and female companions, may Allah be pleased with them, Allah Almighty said :
(يَرْفَعِ الله الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا مِنكُمْ وَالَّذِينَ أُوتُوا الْعِلْمَ دَرَجَاتٍ ۚ والله بِمَا تَعْمَلُونَ خَبِيرٌ) (المجادلة: 11)
Which means: )Allāh will raise those who have believed among you and those who were given knowledge, by degrees. And Allāh is Aware of what you do.(
The more she learns and practices that which she learns; the higher she rises in ranks, the smaller the Dunya becomes in her eyes, and the greater the ranks of Jannah will be in her heart and greater will be the pursuit of it… and that is a sufficient victory.
Allah Almighty said:
(إِنَّمَا يَخْشَى الله مِنْ عِبَادِهِ الْعُلَمَاءُ ۗ إِنَّ الله عَزِيزٌ غَفُورٌ) (فاطر: 28)
Which means: (Only those fear Allāh, from among His servants, who have knowledge. Indeed, Allāh is Exalted in Might and Forgiving.)
Seeking knowledge for women who are stable at home is a great occupation and job, for she seeks it for the sake of: reviving her heart and the hearts of those around her, fighting ignorance and innovations in the religion, and calling people to monotheism and the Sunnah… and in that is a great virtue that is simply incomparable!
The job of seeking knowledge requires dedication, concentration and dedication that the woman who goes out of the house every day cannot achieve, nor compete for, because the sights she witnesses on her path are obstacles before such a noble goal!
4- The job of the expert in handicrafts and artistry:
Our mother ‘Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) described our mother Zainab (may Allah be pleased with her) by saying:
“…and I have never seen a woman more advanced in religious piety than Zainab, more God-conscious, more truthful, more alive to the ties of blood, more generous and having more sense of self-sacrifice in practical life and having more charitable disposition and thus more close to God, the Exalted, than her.”
In a narration narrated from ‘Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) also: The Messenger of Allah (may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him) said: “One who has the longest hands amongst you would meet me most immediately.” She farther said: They (the wives of Allah’s Apostle) used to measure the hands as to whose hand was the longest and it was the hand of Zainab that was the longest amongst them, as she used to work with her hand and spend (that income) on charity.
So this is Zainab, mother of the believers, who would craft with her hands and later give her income as charity.
There is a long and inspiring list of crafts and arts that women can master, from knitting, handicrafts, homemade crafts, and other beautiful creations that can become a source of livelihood or at least a source of happiness at home and a way to create touching and unique gifts.
A woman who masters such a craft offers many bounties to her home and those around her.
Such a women’s home will be found to be warmer and more unique. Her touches extending from its corners and nooks to her children’s rooms, the homes of her neighbors and loved ones, and to the fields of competing in favorable acts!
5- The job of a “chef” knowledgeable in cooking matters:
Anyone who contemplates how the world takes care of professional chefs, how certificates of success and superiority are proudly distributed to them, how culinary academies are provided for them, and how international and national competitions are created for them, realizes that cooking isn’t merely about eating, but is also a science and art!
The woman who excels in this field has a lead and advantage in her community, as she delights her family members and can also delight her relatives, guests, and even the poor and needy with her unique donations.
It is clear that many women today have gotten used to laziness, eating fast food and “instant ramen”. Their lives have turned into a mechanical life, lacking the spirit of that generous and giving woman.
On the other hand, many of us cherish the memories of a grandmother who would bake bread or cook a beloved traditional dish. Growing up with those memories since childhood, allowed us to realize after maturity that a family sitting with a meal prepared by grandma’s hand certainly made us happier than all the meals of famous and luxurious restaurants, and therefore I say, learning the art of cooking must start early, and that the girl learns it with love and passion and as a science, art, a means of making others happy, and charity, and not as a heavy arduous task that exhausts her, for there is a big difference between the woman who puts forth her dish in heavily and in an insulting manner and between the woman presenting it affectionately and with a generous spirit in all details of her dish and the details of its presentation!
It’s a shortcoming of a woman to not be able to cook, and a great deficiency that a reasonable man does not like, for cooking is the profession of the wife and mother, and whoever is not good at it is in a predicament!
A woman who is at home can turn her knowledge of cooking into an ongoing charity, and produce cookbooks for her recipes and publish them with piety, without extravagance and without it causing corruption. She can also do charity by giving the recipes she loves most to those most in need. Through cooking, she can also exchange cultures with others, and in that is great fun, happiness and righteousness. It can also become a livelihood for her if she needs it, as she can make and sell food.
6- Job of a home-decorating expert:
Some women study for years in order to obtain a certificate of expertise in arranging and decorating, although a woman who stays at home can have a better and more beautiful taste than many interior-design graduates in our time, with her delicate sense, searching for the means of turning her nest into a paradise, and not doing so by spending a lot of money nor with extravagance, but with a clear taste, beautiful inspiration, and a blessed influential believing spirit.
And here we can find a wide door for decoration ideas, ornaments, and inspiring details that a woman can find in her designated places.
When we enter her kingdom, we can sense perfected touches with a generous spirit, warm corners, and intelligence in transforming occasions and holidays into unforgettable stations!
She can also transform her ideas into ongoing charity for housewives, for ideas are like nails; the more they are knocked on, the deeper they go… and just how many ideas created happiness in a home and made easier many matters!?
7- The job of philanthropy and competing for good deeds:
I believe that this job is one of the most honorable and greatest jobs for Muslim women, as she senses the needs of Muslims and the vulnerable and fulfills them, her mind preoccupied with thinking about the doors open for racing towards righteous acts that continue to bear their fruit and ongoing charity, and planning to create an impact in every field of giving, charity and altruism, and this alone is a field that requires proper engineering, management, interim objectives, and long-term goals— requiring strategic cooperation, jurisprudence, insight and reverence!
Whoever contemplates the biographies of those before will find that the free Muslim woman was always present and associated with scenes of giving, generosity, and ongoing almsgiving, and blessed is she who is known for such in her neighborhood and among those who do not even know who she is… and the greatest of all is to be mentioned by Allah to the angels above!
Some women from our time and age have managed to deliver their charities to the deserts of Africa and the shores of Asia! Helping a Muslim in need, quenching his thirst, satisfying his stomach, nourishing his mind with useful knowledge, and strengthening his heart with the Qur’an and donating copies of the Qur’an.
Such a job requires dedication and hard work, not just an idea that sparks for one day then goes dark for a year! It is sufficient for this that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) commanded women to give charity, and charity comes in many different sizes and shapes, so it does not necessarily have to be costly and expensive, but rather even if it were a charity of water or some dates, it would have been beneficial and blessed. Every woman gives according to her ability, and every woman has her way in righteousness. Do not belittle any good deed, for you are dealing with the Lord of the heavens and the earth who knows your secret and what you make public and that which is more hidden!
We have in the women of the Salaf majestic examples of the methods of charity, in performing them is much wisdom and foresight.
8- The job of a teacher and nanny:
When I speak about the childcarer, I’m speaking about the mother, the first school from which Muslim generations graduate
Childcare in itself is a science that requires research, learning, consultations and an effort to creat a proper Muslim character, and this requires knowledge of child psychology and knowledge of insightful methods of education that adapt according to the needs of certain children and their ages.
Whoever has a child or more, is the busiest person and the most bearing of educational and nurturing responsibilities, as it is undoubtedly the most important function on which the Ummah’s dreams and victory for its religion are based.
Shared educational programs can be planned with friends and neighbors, and other programs can be arranged to benefit Muslim children who seek advancement and change. And this is a wide sea of great ideas, where the home-abiding woman can give through it the blessed charity of knowledge.
It would be great if mothers staying at home agree upon educational and developmental programs for their children, creating ideas, plans, and exciting competitions, and creating unforgettable memories for their children, which is one of the most beautiful doors of cooperation on righteousness and piety.
9- The job of sponsoring orphans:
Sponsoring an orphan is not just a monthly cost deposited into the account of the orphanage or riddingguilt by sending money and the matter is over, but rather it is the feelings, attention, and care for an orphan child who was deprived the care and attention of a mother. Women whose minds are busy thinking of orphans deprived the warmth of a family are among the most generous and most motivated souls, constantly reminded by the Hadith where the messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, “I will be like this in Jannah with the person who takes care of an orphan”. Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) raised his forefinger and middle finger by way of illustration.
[Al- Bukhari].
We are a nation of solidarity and cooperation in righteousness and piety, and a woman who can take care of an orphan child, even if it were only every weekend he visits at her home and provides him with a family atmosphere, education, advice, and attention… would find it a great door of good!
Why am I talking about orphans? because they are a neglected segment in society, and every family that cares for an orphan contributes to solving this problem in the Ummah.
10- The job of a beautifier:
The female is naturally inclined to love adornment and take care of its multiple details, and this includes creating self-care recipes and collecting cosmetic ideas and how to be a good wife for her husband. The woman staying at home can become an expert in this art by studying it, for it has plenty of references and concepts, and also by providing cosmetic and adorning services to her friends and sisters in God who do not master this art, and in that is a great maintaining of femininity and creation of beauty and happiness in homes and the worship of being a good wife.
11- The job of a specialized researcher:
Here, in the reality of women staying at home. we speak about jobs and not just one job, women may have a passion for a particular science, such as pedagogy, psychology, social studies, or history— truly any number of sciences that benefit women, their families, and their nation, and she only needs for that to download and provide books and references specialized in this science and to follow the methodology of the researcher, spreading outinformation and writing down what should be jotted, learning her desired science or field gradually until she masters it, and asking the people of knowledge, searching for what expands her knowledge and awareness of the topic.
How many “freelancing” students exceeded the level of professors at universities? That is because the bounty of God is great, and He bestows it on whom He wills from his servants and because knowledge is not exclusive to formal institutions nor confined between the walls of schools and universities, but rather it is much larger and spans farther than that limited area, and the more a woman rises in her field of knowledge or science, she the more she feels just how much she was made absent, especially in the sciences that benefit her nation and solve its thorny issues… for the knowledge of history, human psychology, the movement of humans throughout history, and the laws of God in the earth— and other related sciences; expand one’s awareness and betters one’s perception, and every science has its benefits!
Several women can participate in the same study and together advance through similar specialized tasks.
12- The job of the writer and poet:
It is a job in which women often excel, just as Al-Khansa excelled. How beautiful it is for the Islamic library to be enhanced with the enrichments of eloquent female writers, with literature, children’s literature, and morals— with the arts and aesthetics of the Arabic language, and to support the Arabic language as an Islamic teacher and an identity anchor!
Engaging in Arabic literature is undoubtedly a means of breaking defeatism, and the writer does not need to go out, for, within her home, she can scatter the most beautiful meanings and form the most beautiful poems and poetry, enriching the literary and educational arena.
13. The job of a preacher, benefiting others:
This is a job that not all women can do, but rather it is for she who has obtained a certain amount of legitimate knowledge that enables her to fulfill this great duty.
She can be active on the media and locally according to her need, ability, and circumstances… or she can give a lecture to the women of the neighborhood in a house or in the mosque, even if only once a week, and in that would be much good. She can also work online in the virtual world, spreading Islamic knowledge and the Qur’an, it is a great world of determination and work that also enables access to all languages of the world…and letters are ashamed to describe the size of our shortcoming in this world.
14- The job of the media “mujahidah”:
We are talking about a very great gap in a time of vulnerability, a gap that requires a heart throbbing with sincerity, love for the religion of God, and loyalty to the believers. A gap that requires preparation, sincerity and perseverance to fill the the gaps of the media and become victorious on this network, while abiding by the Islamic guidelines of course. Just how many battalions of women striving in the media from their boudoirs terrified the oppressors and supported the weak?
This alone requires great dedication and learning of the arts of media, from the media industry, methods of publishing, writing and good information management, and the Muslim woman can perform it at home alone or in a team of others competing for good deeds like her, and whether she works alone or in a team, in both ways there is virtue.
15- The job as a translator:
We have many sisters who are fluent in a foreign language or several languages, and women in this case can harness their translation skills to raise the word of God Almighty and support Muslims everywhere, whether through translating efforts of “Dawah”, Islamic journalism, or studies and research that are important for the nation. This includes the translation of scientific works, historical texts, other texts that teach lessons, morals, and integrity, and really anything that is of benefit to revive hearts and provide information and benefit to those who search for it and even those who do not search!
Thanks to her language skills, she can also work in “Dawah” arenas in other languages.
The Prophet (ﷺ) said to ‘Ali (May Allah be pleased with him), “By Allah, if a single person is guided by Allah through you, it will be better for you than a whole lot of red camels.”
[Al-Bukhari and Muslim].
The Prophet (ﷺ) said, “Convey from me even an Ayah of the Qur’an”.
[Al- Bukhari].
16- Job of a designer:
Design today plays a major role in the network and in fact, mastering the arts of design (for which free or specialized courses are available) is important for developing accessible means for this field.
Designing also includes mastering the arts of montage and creating videos to spread knowledge and create awareness. It also includes providing designs for Dawah, enlightenment, and guidance publications, and designs enjoining virtue and forbidding evil, which is an active gap connected to many fields, and requires focus, sincerity and smart fruitful plans of action.
Women staying at home can work in designing through the network within the guidelines of the esteemed Shariah.
17- The job of the librarian:
A woman who is staying at home can make her home the most beautiful library in which anything beneficial to the Muslim woman and the Muslim family can be found, as well as books beneficial to other different categories of the Ummah with various fields of knowledge. The Muslim woman at home can benefit in this way by providing electronic libraries and references for those who search for them, and by masterfully presenting and indicating information. With this she can turn into a dedicated researcher that guides people to goodness and sources of knowledge, and guides them to the books that benefit them, and it is okay to publish the summarizations of her readings or others’ summarizations that will expand with sincere seeking and demanding.
18- The job of the matchmaker:
This may seem strange, but we are in a time when it is very important to link the righteous men with righteous women to form families with greater love for Allah Almighty and more greatly disciplined by His Shariah, and so that they may raise a generation capable of bearing the burdens of empowering the religion of Allah Almighty and establishing the structure of Islam on earth. For this, Muslim women can strive to link families and people of knowledge and virtue, with piety and fear of Allah Almighty and with the hope of reform and success.
Matchmaking for marriage was known at the time of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) and the Salaf (righteous predecessors) (may Allaah be pleased with them all).
19- The job of the counseling housewife:
A woman who is abiding at home can open a window for herself to benefit her sisters in Allah, by providing advice and answering consultations in everything related to the arts of being a housewife— from the details of cooking, arrangement, cleaning, and personal care, to the details of upbringing and managing relationships and homes with piety.
Many women do not know where to start, and providing guidance and awareness in the arts of being a righteous housewife is a beneficial field knowledge that requires and accountability and sincerity.
20- The job of an inspirational wife and a good mother.
Women staying at home can pick up multiple jobs from the aforementioned, as much as possible and necessary.
Now we can only imagine the home in which the wife and mother becomes a source of inspiration and knowledge, enriching her gatherings with everything that is useful, and turning her home into a beloved paradise for everyone who enters it, making everyone in it happy with her diligence and with her hope for the mercy of her Lord.
The greatest job of a woman who is abiding at home is to be a good wife and a good mother, and this alone requires great devotion and dedication, so that neither the family nor the nation can be attacked behind her back.
Conclusion:
Thus, we have collected the most prominent jobs that a woman can perform at home, however, other jobs may branch out according to the necessity of each circumstance and situation.
We note that these jobs are ones that create in a woman’s life a lot of activity and busyness, and even the woman stationed at home may not find much time for herself. How then will she find the time to go out and be miserable in jobs that do not exceed the interests of the company or her monthly salary (which in any case cannot compensate for any of the jobs we have mentioned in this list)?
The Muslim woman at home can set a weekly schedule to perform as many of these jobs as possible, developing her knowledge and skills, and determining what she wants to achieve, for the benefit of herself, her family, and her Ummah. Hence, we will see elevated role models of Muslim women seeking the greatest ranks of Jannah. We will see invaluable role models and examples.
Talking about abiding at home does not end with this article, but rather it is important to constantly highlight the problems of women at home, and we will address in future articles topics more attentive to this matter and better at addressing their concerns and guiding their interests, may Allah grant us enlightenment and success.
O Allah, strengthen Muslim women with useful knowledge, good deeds, and righteous believing companionship, and please them with the pleasure of being close to you Almighty, and with the pleasure of striving to uphold Your word and establish the structure of Islam on earth, and bringing out worthy cavalry for the Ummah, with greater love for Allah, better practicing of His great religion, and following the Sunnah of his Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). O Allah, spare them all temptations, both the obvious and the concealed.

القرار في البيت بين “المقبرة” و”المملكة”: 20 وظيفة للمرأة القارة في البيت
